Thomas Parkinson was nine years old. Nothing exciting had ever happened to him. In fact, his entire life had been one long continuous bore. But that's how he liked things. No excitement meant no risk. No risk meant no confrontation. And no confrontation meant he didn't have to face his dreaded fears.
But as the sun rose in the clear blue sky he knew that time was closing in. It was the middle of summer and Thomas was about to spend his vacation with Uncle Fibber; a retired fisherman who lived by the sea. Playing on the nearby beach and re-enacting his uncle's sea-faring adventures sounded ever so exciting and very dangerous.
When Thomas unfolded the huge map it felt so brittle and he had to be very careful not to break the fragile pages which stank of stale fish cakes as he brushed away the delicate cobwebs. But that was the least of his worries. With a loud gasp Thomas looked long and hard, and still couldn’t believe his eyes. The entire page showed nothing but a barren landscape.
He may as well spend his vacation on the moon.
Then he spotted it. At the very bottom of the page, sitting right on the ragged edge of the coastline was Sneaky Cove. That’s where Uncle Fibber lived, in Shanty Cottage, a quaint little wooden shack he’d built with his bare hands.
Thomas’s heart suddenly skipped a beat. He could feel a razor sharp surge of dread welling up inside his entire body like a volcano about to erupt. He just knew that his worst nightmare was about to begin. Why did he have to stay with Uncle Fibber, a crazy daredevil who loved adventure and laughed in the face of danger?
But in that horrid moment Thomas suddenly giggled. Shanty Cottage was in the middle of nowhere. What sort of scary adventure could possibly happen in the middle of nowhere, he laughed? Great! This was going to be the most boring holiday ever.
Little did Thomas realize that for the next two weeks his life was going to be anything but boring. He was totally unaware that he was about to embark on an adventure where he would confront the most powerful forces of evil and where his life would be in constant danger. And he’d never have guessed in a million years that he was about to come face to face with his most dreaded fears.
